How to Make HDR Photos on iPhone: Camera Mode and Fixes

Point your iPhone at a sunset and the screen does something clever. The sky keeps its oranges, the trees in front stay dark green instead of turning into silhouettes, and both fit in one frame. That is Smart HDR doing its job before you even press the shutter. Apple has shipped some version of it on every iPhone since the iPhone XS, and it is the reason phone photos of backlit scenes look entirely different from shots taken ten years ago.
But HDR on an iPhone is a capture-time feature. It works on the photo you are about to take. It does nothing for the thousands of shots already sitting in your camera roll, and it gives you almost no control over the result. If you missed the moment, or the phone got it wrong, you need a different route.

What iPhone HDR mode actually does
HDR stands for high dynamic range. The idea is simple. A scene like a sunset, or a room with a bright window, has a wider spread of light than a sensor can record in a single exposure. Expose for the bright sky and the ground clips to black. Expose for the ground and the sky blows out to white. HDR is the way around that.
On an iPhone you do not see the bracketing. The camera fires a fast burst of exposures at different brightness levels and merges them before you ever see the result. That merged frame keeps detail in the highlights and the shadows at once. Apple calls the whole system Smart HDR, and it has been getting more aggressive with each generation.
The important thing to know is that it happens automatically. You do not manage it frame by frame. The iPhone decides when to apply it based on the scene, and in most situations it is the right call.
How to turn on HDR on your iPhone
For most people, the correct setting is to leave HDR alone and let the phone handle it. On modern iPhones, HDR is baked into the default camera mode and there is no visible toggle to turn it off. Apple dropped the manual HDR switch years ago.
What you can control is the outcome. A few habits make a real difference.
Hold the phone steady. Smart HDR merges several frames shot in quick succession. If the phone moves between them, the merge shows it. Bracing against something or using both hands gives a cleaner result, especially in lower light.
Give the phone time to finish. The burst happens fast, but the merge takes a moment. Keep the phone still for a beat after you press the shutter, not just while pressing it.
Let the exposure settle before you shoot. Tap the screen to lock focus and exposure on the scene, then let the phone re-evaluate. Tap the bright window and the phone brightens the darkest parts, which can blow out highlights elsewhere. Tapping the middle of the scene usually gives the most balanced result.
Use a third-party camera if you want real control. The built-in app does not let you bracket manually. Apps like Halide or a ProRAW workflow do. For most people this is overkill, but it is the honest answer to "where is the control?"
Where iPhone HDR falls short
The camera roll is the weak spot. Smart HDR only runs at the moment of capture. Every photo in your library that was taken before the feature existed, or taken in a moment when the phone decided not to use it, is stuck with whatever single exposure the sensor recorded.
Three situations come up constantly.
Old photos. Photos from a phone bought before the iPhone XS, or from a camera that never had HDR, contain no merged HDR data. The sky is white, the shadows are black, and there is no way for the phone to retroactively recover a bracket it never took.
Missed moments. You snap a quick shot of a friend in front of a window and the phone fails to balance the light. The window blows out. The photo is sharp and in focus, but the exposure is wrong, and it is already saved.
Underexposed or overexposed shots. Even with Smart HDR on, a badly metered shot can still clip. Dark corners, bright skies, and mixed lighting exceed what the phone manages. Smart HDR is a good default, not a guarantee.
In all three cases the fix is not in the camera. It is in the edit.
How to make an HDR photo from an existing iPhone shot
