Scroll a feed for a minute and you start to notice it. Two photos of the same subject, and one looks like a washed-out copy of the other. Same topic, same phone, same upload. The difference is usually tonal range, and it is one of the most underused tools in social photography. What HDR changes for social media
Instagram and most feeds compress images to a common display standard, so the HDR you see on a screen is not the full HDR file. What survives is the important part: the tonal relationships. A photo converted to HDR has highlights that do not clip, shadows with detail instead of black holes, and more separation between tones. That is what makes a finished shot look clean and punchy instead of dull.
It does not turn a bad photo into a good one. It will not fix focus, composition, or an ugly crop. What it does is let the light that was already in the scene come through. A sunset with a black foreground, a portrait with a blown white background, a food shot with crushed shadows: those are the photos HDR helps.
Why the phone's HDR is not the answer
Phone cameras shoot HDR at capture time and save the result as a standard JPG. By the time the photo is in your library, the HDR work is baked in and the file is a normal JPG. That works for a new shot, but it does nothing for a JPG you already have, especially one taken on an older phone or a camera without HDR.
So "convert JPG to HDR" is not about re-encoding a file. It is about rebuilding the dynamic range of a photo that was captured flat and saving the improved version. It is a generation step, not a format change.
How to convert a JPG to HDR

Keep the color space simple. sRGB is the safe default for social. A wider color space can shift when the platform re-encodes, turning carefully recovered shadows into something muddy.
